LWF 2011 Pecha Kucha

Page history last edited by Tony Vincent 13 years, 3 months ago

There's an App for That!

Educators, learners, developers and more - you have 6’40”
to describe your favourite app for learning (Pecha Kucha style).

Part of Learning Without Frontiers Free Sunday Service (get tickets)

Sunday 9th January 2011, 14:30-16:30

Venue - The Brewery, London

There's an App for That! promises to be fast-paced, educational, and outright fun. Most of us will be spectators and learners. Approximately 14 of us will speak in front of the room about an education app or activity. Each presentation will be exactly 6 minutes and 40 seconds. We get that specific timing because presentations will be made of 20 slides and slides advance automatically every 20 seconds. Topics can include iOS apps, Android apps, web apps, classroom activities, student projects, and mobile learning topics.

Procedures for Presenters

  • When you are sure you want to present, sign up using this form. Signing up is optional, but can ensure you a spot.
  • There may not be time for everyone who signs up to present. The first 14 to sign up will receive an email by January 3rd.
  • Keynote or PowerPoint file must be exactly 20 slides.
  • Each slide must be set to automatically advance after 20 seconds. You should not touch a computer, mouse, or remote once you start your presentation.
  • Have your Keynote or PowerPoint file on a flash drive, ready to plug into the laptop connected to the projector.
  • Alternatively, you may choose to show an app live using a document camera instead of using a slideshow as the visual aid. The same 6 minute 40 second time limit applies if you choose to do a live demonstration.
  • Tony Vincent will set a timer for 6 minutes 40 seconds for each presentation. The time limit will be strictly enforced. It's nothing personal.
  • There will be a chat room for the audience to give feedback and ask questions during the presentation.

Advice for Presenters

  • Use photos that take up the whole slide.
  • Avoid putting large amounts of text on your slides.
  • Plan to say three sentences per slide.
  • Limit your presentation to what is essential and what is interesting.
  • Avoid using animations and transitions. They can interfere with the timing of your slide show.
  • Practice to see how much you can really say in 6 minutes 40 seconds.
  • If you reference a long web address, use a URL shortener like bit.ly.
  • Include screenshots of apps. Read how to take screenshots on iPad, iPod touch, and iPhone
  • Add your presentation, notes, or any handouts to the presentation wiki page.
  • Email tony@learninginhand.com if you have questions.
